DORN - Spiegel Der Unendlichkeit

Spiegel der Unendlichkeit

2007 CD - CCP Records

This German combo heads for the "symphonic dark metal" genre, and from what I can read on the bio, the lyrics seem to be of quite a level - conceptual yet highly metaphorical. Too bad they're all in German. Under the guiding presence of deep, full grunting vocals, the musical achievements of Dorn expand themselves. While the guitars sporadically adopt riffing which has a vague sense of melody attached to it, they usually serve as rhythm section, causing them to lose their prominence a bit.

The songs are heavily dependent on keys to create the melody, and this works well to a certain extent: the atmosphere is either agreeable or pressing - often with a epic and solemn undertone. The spine of the compositions is formed by the accentuating drumming, lending a good dose of groove, through the use of regular doublekick intervals. The songs are written well and each one has its own recognizable tune, so to speak. But apart from this, there's not much more to say: Dorn's style becomes obvious after a couple of tracks. Even though the factor of predictability is high, they know how to insert enough variation to keep things interesting nonetheless. Enjoyable.
